The Mathews High School girls’ cross country team had a successful week of competition, defeating Lancaster on the road and winning the Girls’ Bronze Division at the Maymont Cross Country Festival in Richmond.
After Lancaster delivered a 1-2 punch in last Wednesday’s meet, the Lady Blue Devils’ perfect regular season appeared to be in jeopardy. However, the Mathews girls responded with a knockout blow of their own, claiming seven of the next eight places to seal the victory.
The Lady Devils followed up their strong showing at Lancaster with their best performance in many years, claiming first place on Saturday at Maymont. The pack of Emily Brown (third, 22:48), Nancy Barnhardt (fourth, 22:51), and Rachel Corrigan (fifth, 22:51) posted very low point totals and put the squad in an excellent position.
