Mathews General District Court will soon have offices open full-time in the Liberty Square complex in Mathews. The court shares a clerk with Middlesex County, and the clerk has long been located in Saluda.
Clerk Amy Pierce said that beginning on July 1, the Mathews office will open full-time, with two deputy clerks there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a daily basis, while Pierce will continue to divide her time between the Mathews and Middlesex offices.
Equipment in the Mathews office will be upgraded, said Pierce, including the addition of a public access computer, and all of the Mathews files, currently located in Saluda, will be moved to Mathews. There will be a new mailing address, as well.
The clerk has always been in Mathews on court day, which is held every other Monday, but it wasn’t until last year that a deputy clerk began spending a half day in the office every Thursday, as well. Then the pandemic hit and everything was shut down.
Because the goal has long been to have a full-time office in Mathews, said Pierce, last October, when the courts began reopening to the public, Thursdays in Mathews became full-time, and Tuesdays were added. Then last week, Wednesday was added, as well, so that currently the clerk’s office is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday every week, and Monday through Thursday every other week.
With the transition to all five days occurring in just six weeks, Pierce said she wants to make sure everyone is aware that no Mathews transactions will be done in the Middlesex office after July 1.
Mathews General District Court is in District 9 of the statewide court system. It encompasses Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex, King and Queen, and King William, as well as York, Williamsburg/James City, New Kent, and Charles City on the Peninsula. The judges serving the district are Stephanie E. Merritt, Stephen Ashton Hudgins and Colleen K. Killilea.
