Mathews defeats GHS in varsity matchups

The varsity basketball programs from Mathews and Gloucester high schools faced off with one another last Wednesday and the Blue Devils triumphed over the Dukes in both the boys’ and girls’ games.

The girls opened the Gloucester-Mathews battle. With the score being close the entire game, the MHS finished strong to defeat Gloucester, 48-41.

Senior Joice Small led the Devils in scoring, finishing the night with 21 points. Junior Reese Brock also ended the game in double digits with 10 points. Rounding out the scoring for Mathews were junior Kayla Carr (six points), junior Emmillie Smith (four points), junior Zayle Darby (three points), junior Sarah Ashbaugh (two points) and junior Olivia Ashbaugh and sophomore Trinity Reynolds (one point each).

Individual results for the Gloucester girls were not available.

In the nightcap, junior Tae Legette scored a phenomenal 33 points as Mathews defeated the homestanding Dukes, 68-55. Freshmen Tremane Greene (13 points) and Jordyn Cosby (nine points) were also top scorers for Mathews.

Also contributing to the Mathews victory were seniors Daveon Johnson (five points) and Ja’Marri Henderson (four points), freshman Ryan Bacelar (three points) and senior Colin Frazier (one point).

For Gloucester, Connor Brooks was the top scorer with a total of 16 points, followed by Dylan Deyoung with a total of 14 points and Braden Hudgins with 10 points. Other scorers for Gloucester included Bryce Monroe with seven points, and Will Turner and Alex Vanvrankin with four points each.
