Mathews closes season with late rally effort

In its last game of the season, the Mathews Blue Devil baseball team fell to the Middlesex Chargers last Thursday by a 16-6 margin. Although the score was not in the Devils’ favor, the team showed resilience late in the game with a strong fifth-inning comeback effort. After being held scoreless through the first four innings, Mathews broke through in the fifth inning with six runs. Six players recorded hits for the Blue Devils, including freshman Morgan Sterne, senior Blake Hunley, sophomore Treye Church, freshman Brandon Hubbard, sophomore Michael Wiatt, and junior Mason Perry. Church led the team with two RBIs, while Sterne, Hunley and Wiatt each added one. Most of the Devils’ offensive momentum came late in the game as they continued fighting to close the gap. Hubbard started on the mound for the Blue Devils in the final game, pitching two innings while recording three strikeouts and allowing six earned runs.
