Campgrounds in Mathews County that were scheduled to open on April 1 will not be opening now until April 16.

According to an email from Mathews County Administrator Mindy Conner, the 15-day delay in opening was instituted at the request of Mathews Emergency Services Director Willie Love.

“We were very concerned about the additional strain on our limited resources that an influx of additional people would bring,” said Conner. “The campers are important to our local economy, and we certainly welcome them once we are all past this very challenging point in time.”
