Mathews BOS to meet tonight

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors has two meetings coming up, the regular monthly meeting at 6 o’clock this evening, Thursday, May 21, in the historic courthouse on Court Street, and a joint public hearing with the Mathews Planning Commission at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the same location.

Two public hearings are on the agenda for tonight’s meeting. One is a request by Robert Blake for a conditional use permit to allow for a travel trailer to be occupied for habitation on a temporary basis at 458 Tabernacle Road, Mathews.

The second is a request by Cynthia Montague and Cynthia Montague Properties LLC for a conditional use permit for a retail store, museum and art gallery in the old Bavon Post Office at 8 Circle Drive.

The board will additionally hear a special presentation by Dee Russell, treasurer of the Mathews Economic Development Authority, regarding the benefits, requirements and costs of Mathews becoming a Certified Local Government.

Other items on the agenda include a request by the Mathews Main Street Committee that the county again participate in the Virginia Main Street Program, a proposal that the board participate in a strategic planning session for the county, and a request that the board approve a 2 percent bonus for certain constitutional positions that come under Virginia Compensation Board guidelines.

After the regular meeting, the board will hold a closed session to consider candidates for appointment to the Mathews Economic Development Authority.

Joint public hearing

During Tuesday’s joint meeting with the planning commission, the board will hold a public hearing on an application by The Towers LLC and Cellco Partnership, along with property owners James and Esther McFarland, for a conditional use permit to build and operate a 199-foot telecommunications tower on a 20-acre parcel of land on Cherry Point Road, adjacent to several parcels in the 200 and 300 blocks of Old Farm Road, on Gwynn’s Island.

A public hearing on this matter was originally scheduled to be heard during the May 12 planning commission meeting, but was rescheduled prior to that meeting.
