Mathews BOS to meet today on Hole in the Wall

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a special meeting for 11 o’clock this morning, Thursday, Feb. 5, in the historic courthouse on Court Street. A previously scheduled budget workshop will be held at 1 p.m. at the same location to hear budget requests from outside agencies.

Three purposes were given for the meeting. The first is to hold a closed session for discussion and briefings by staff members and legal counsel regarding an out-of-court settlement on two lawsuits brought against the county by Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill.

One of the suits is an injunction challenging the eviction of Hole in the Wall from county-owned premises in July 2025 by the Mathews County Board of Supervisors and is titled Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill LLC v Mathews County Board of Supervisors and Ramona Wilson. The court granted an emergency injunction pending a full hearing on the case. That full hearing was initially set for trial in October 2025, but has been continued several times.

The other case is a $20 million suit filed in August 2025 alleging malicious prosecution and abuse of process against the Mathews Board of Supervisors and former supervisors Dave Jones and Mike Walls. This suit is titled Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill LLC v Board of Supervisors of Mathews County, et al. Process was never served on the defendants in this suit.

After the closed session, the board will return to open session and address the two remaining purposes of the meeting. One of those is to provide additional information regarding a Jan. 23 hearing date pertaining to Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill LLC v Mathews County Board of Supervisors and Ramona Wilson. This hearing date was continued after the attorney for Hole in the Wall withdrew from the case at his client’s request.

The final purpose of the meeting is to clarify/discuss board process in terms of staff requests and information sharing among board members.
