Mathews board adopts amended budget

After having its initial budget request cut by more than $400,000 by county supervisors, the Mathews School Board regrouped Tuesday night to adopt its amended FY 2017 budget during the meeting in the Mathews High School media center.

Several new positions were cut and raises were trimmed to comply with the $13.7 million budget. Although supervisors cut the school board’s request, the county board did allocate nearly $100,000 more in next year’s budget, as compared to the current FY 2016 figure—from $7.35 million to $7.45 million in local funds.

New positions cut from the initial proposal included a media specialist at Thomas Hunter Middle School, a reading specialist and kindergarten teacher at Lee-Jackson Elementary, a full-time maintenance worker and two special education teacher assistants.
