Mathews beats Pointers to improve to 12-5

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team picked up a win
Tuesday night against the visiting West Point Pointers, 63-28. The win
breaks a three-game losing streak, with the most recent losses coming at
the hands of Charles City last Wednesday and King William on Friday in a
pair of road games.

West Point

Tuesday night’s win over West Point puts Mathews tied for first in
the district and second in the region. Leading scorers were Nasir Thomas
with 16 points and Christian Williams with 11. Following the win, the
MHS record improved to 12-5. Before the opening tipoff, Williams and
Caleb Thomas were recognized for reaching the 1,000-point career
milestone.

King William

The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead on Friday and never let up,
beating the visiting Devils, 70-54. Leading scorers for Mathews were
Thomas with 24 points and 17 rebounds, and Williams with 7 on 3/4
shooting.
