Mathews bakery converted to café

Two sisters have converted their bakery to Mathews County’s newest café.

Bakery in the Village Café, located on Main Street, continues to showcase the baked goods of Bonnie Olrogge and Wenda Henry, both of Yorktown. But they have recently begun selling lots of savory hand pies.

Hand pies are like a pot pie, Olrogge said, but are larger and have healthful fillings such as pot roast, chicken and broccoli, and a southwestern combination featuring black beans and spices. They can be purchased already cooked or frozen and ready to prepare at home.

Also, they have added sausage rolls, which Olrogge said have been moving briskly out of their warming case.

Other lunch favorites include chicken salad and pimento cheese, sold in sandwiches and in box lunches with cheese wafers.

Soon, Olrogge said they will add a selection of specialty coffees. They already sell coffee, tea, soft drinks and bottled water. The baked goods that the sisters started the business with are stil...
