Martha Dunlevy, kitchen master

In the northwest section of Gloucester County, just short of the King and Queen line, is where Martha Dunlevy has lived her entire life; and she loves every minute of it.

She grew up in a family of four siblings. “My mother was a great cook and that’s where I learned. I first started making cakes and then went on to cooking when Mother was doing other things. We did a lot of canning, something I’ve done all my life and still do. Friends and neighbors bring us vegetables this time of the year and you can bet I will be putting them up.”

Although Martha worked in a florist’s shop for 27 years, she continued her baking of cakes, canning and just being a good cook every day. “Even today with just the two of us I still do a lot of cooking. The evening meal is our largest of the day.” All through the years she did a lot of sewing. Now that she is retired, she can spend almost as much time in her sewing room as in her kitchen.
