Marshall denied bond in child sex abuse case

 

Mathews County Circuit Court was packed last Wednesday during a bond hearing for Mathews resident Kenneth Scott Marshall, 36, who stands accused of felony charges of forcible sodomy of a minor in which the victim was helpless or incapacitated, and aggravated sexual battery of a minor who was helpless or incapacitated.

Judge Jeffrey W. Shaw denied bail for Marshall after two hours of arguments, during which members of Cornerstone Fellowship, the church that Marshall attends, testified on his behalf. Marshall, clad in an orange prison jumpsuit and wearing wrist and ankle restraints, listened solemnly throughout. He was represented by Stephen A. Dunnigan of Dunnigan & Messier in Newport News.

Several church members testified that while they were aware that Marshall had a criminal past, they believed that his conversion to Christianity had made him a different person. Some of those speaking also questioned the veracity of Marshall’s juvenile accuser.
