‘Magical ’50s Christmas’

The Mathews Museum on Mathews Main Street has a new window display for the holidays, featuring “A Little Girl’s Magical ’50s Christmas.” Created by Amanda Robinson of Richmond, the display includes miniature furniture, appliances, and toys of the 1950s, along with a mid-century Christmas tree. The museum is also accepting letters for Santa Claus in a special holiday mailbox by the front door. “Santa plans to answer all your child’s Christmas letters if you get them in before he has to return to the North Pole to get ready for the big day,” said a press release. Also on display is a bronze statue of Captain Sally Tompkins, the Mathews native who, as the only female commissioned officer in the Confederate Army, became known as the “Angel of the Confederacy.” Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
