Maddie Brown earns VHSL Regional Player of Year honors

Top-seeded Mathews High School tennis singles player Maddie Brown won the Region 1A East Singles Championship last week, earning the title of VHSL Regional Player of the Year.

While Brown claimed the singles title, she and doubles partner Madelyn Johnson were also the Region 1A East Doubles Tournament runners-up. The MHS team, singles and doubles are competing in all three VHSL State Tennis Tournament semifinals this week at Radford University.

It is rare when a team earns a spot in all three tournaments being one of the top four teams, singles and doubles players in the state.

Last Tuesday, Brown and Johnson traveled to Franklin​ High School to compete in the Region 1A East Singles and Doubles Tournaments. At 9 a.m., Brown set out on her quest for the championship. She played her quarterfinal match against Hannah Jackson from Middlesex. While it was a well-played match between the girls​, ​Brown ​played a strong game and won convincingly, 6-1, 6-0.
