Machicomoco State Park holds August programs

Machicomoco State Park in Hayes will hold a number of programs throughout August.

Several “Design at Dusk” art programs are being held this month at 6 p.m. on Aug. 1 and 26 (“Wildlife Wired”), Aug. 7 (“Paint the Park”), Aug. 16 (“Jewelry of the Powhatans”). Pre-registration is required along with a $10 fee.

Junior Ranger events will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 5 (“Discovery Digs”) and 13 (“Tree ID”), at 6 p.m. on Aug. 20 (“Discovery Digs”) and 4 p.m. on Aug. 28 (“Tree ID”) where guests can earn a patch upon completion.

“Trek for Tracks,” a program that allows park goers to identify animal tracks and cast their own, will be held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 5 and 10 a.m. on Aug. 28 at the Demonstration Circle.

“Conservation Exploration,” a program that lets park guests practice wildlife and plant population estimations will be held on Aug. 6 at 10 a.m. and Aug. 19 at 4 p.m. at the Demonstration Circle at the Interpretive Area. Pre-registration is required along with a $10 fee.

Tales with Tails will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Trailhead parking lot, where guests can enjoy face-painting, costume piece and acting activities. Pre-registration is required for this event.

Birding for Beginners, where park guests can learn the basics of bird watching, will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8 and 21.

Tsenacommacah “Smokes and Smores” will be held on Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. held at the Outdoor Classroom. Pre-registration is required along with a $5 fee.

“Water Wash” an event where park goers can test water from different Virginia State Parks to see if they can identify where each sample came from, will be held on Aug. 13 at 3:30 at the Interpretive Area. Pre-registration is required along with a $5 fee.

Park goers can learn how animals and plants at the park get ready for the changing seasons during “Stroll Through the Seasons” on Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. and at 10 a.m. on Aug. 14 at the Interpretive Area.

The “Pollinator Investigator” program will be held at 4 p.m. on Aug. 13. Park goers can discover the pollinators of the park.

“Stories Told When the Animals Spoke,” an event for park goers to hear stories told by our colorful storyteller as she shares the wisdom of life as told by the animals will be held on Aug. 13 and 27 at 6 p.m. at Picnic Shelter 2.

“An Owl Prowl” will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 19, as guest learn different owl calls and take part in interactive activities.

“Soil Sleuth” will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 20, as guests learn different ways to identify the soil under the oak tree in front of Timberneck House by identifying paw prints. Pre-registration and a $5 fee are required.

Park goers will meet at the Interpretive Area to learn about some edible plants to forage for, and poisonous plants that should be avoided during “Plants: Poisonous & Palatable,” at 3 p.m. on Aug. 20.

Design at Dawn art programs will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 22 (“Drawing Machicomoco”) and on Aug. 29 (“Paint the Park”). Pre-registration is required along with a $10 fee.

Park goers can learn how to help out our pollinator friends and how to start a pollinator friendly garden during the “Pollinator Garden Workshop” on Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. at the Interpretive Area.

The Mystery of History Hike will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 27, where park goers can hike with park staff to learn about a mystery or controversy surrounding the arrival of colonists on Native American lands. The hike will start at the Interpretive Area.
