Long ago, close to home

Shoppers crowded the aisles of the new Ben Franklin store in Mathews when it opened in December 1959. Owner Aubrey Tatterson presented door prize winner Lynn Sadler her winning radio. Aubrey and his wife Frances built the store on the site where Tatterson Brothers (Aubrey and Bernard) had previously stood. The Tattersons sold to Delmar and Joan Hooley in 1980, who established Mathews Five and Dime. The building is now part of Mathews Memorial Library.
