Editor, Gazette-Journal: This letter is in response to a letter that ran last month in the Gazette-Journal (“The craziness is over,” Dec. 12, 2024 Readers Write). “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” There is no state-run media in America. Freedom of Speech and of the Press may not ever be prohibited by law. We have the right to speak, to embrace ideas, and enhance our knowledge. Purporting speech to be true without factual support is an uninformed opinion. (This is not to be confused with a judicial opinion, which is an explanation of the reasoning and facts behind a legal decision.)
