Editor, Gazette-Journal: Mathews voters: You will decide in this year’s general election whether to approve a 1 percent local sales tax increase to fund school construction and renovation projects. I encourage you to vote “Yes.” Let me explain why: I graduated from Mathews High School in 1965 … our schools are old! The maintenance has not been a priority and we continue to kick this can down the road. All three of my children graduated from Mathews High School and, at present, I have four grandchildren in the Mathews County School System. I want to be clear that these funds will not be used for salaries, benefits or operating costs. Gloucester approved this tax some years ago. So, when you shop in Gloucester, you are paying this tax and supporting their schools. This tax will not be levied on groceries, prescription drugs or fuel at the pump.
