Editor, Gazette-Journal: I have seen many signs in our area reading, “Vote No, End Gerrymandering.” That slogan is misleading. A “no” vote will not end gerrymandering—it preserves it. President Trump openly endorsed gerrymandering when he urged the Governor of Texas to find “five more” Republican seats in Congress. Governor Abbott followed with an immediate redistricting push that excluded public input and effectively stripped meaningful congressional representation from more than 8 million Texans for the foreseeable future. Now Virginia voters are being asked: “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?” The answer should be clear.
