Editor, Gazette-Journal: I was surprised to see that Governor Spanberger actively supports the plan to redraw Virginia’s congressional district lines. As a former member of the House of Representatives, the governor knows that the only way to get things done in the House is to stay in office for a number of years. Everything depends on seniority. The more senior a House member is, the more effective he or she can be. This redistricting measure could replace a significant number of Virginia U.S. House members with freshmen. If this idea is approved by the voters, it will damage the ability of the Virginia congressional delegation to deliver for our state for decades to come. As an example, it appears that Rep. Rob Wittman, under the “new” map, would be forced to face Rep. Don Beyer in the November election.
