Letter: Visitor Center volunteers wouldn’t act that way

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I was shocked and dismayed to read Mr. Maggard’s letter of June 14 in the Gazette-Journal ("Not in this country," Readers Write). I have been a volunteer at the Mathews Visitor and Information Center since late 2002 and have been the chairman of the administrative board for four years.

None of the volunteers, both past and present, would ever be rude or abrupt to anyone coming into the Center. All of the volunteers are extraordinarily professional, friendly and go out of their way to welcome and help in any way possible. Their love for Mathews and the people they serve is quite evident. I cannot imagine anyone in Mathews treating individuals in the manner Mr. Maggard suggests.

I would welcome the opportunity to talk to Mr. Maggard and the grandmother and grandchild, but an apology from the Visitor Center is not warranted.
