Letter: ‘The Digital Delusion’

Editor, Gazette-Journal: I never thought I would write a letter to the editor of any newspaper, much less with a book recommendation. Although I am a retired teacher, my interest in education and children has not retired. A year and a half or so ago, I read “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” by Jonathan Haidt, and thought that all parents and teachers should read that book. As a result, I recommended it to several people. Now that I have read “The Digital Delusion: How Classroom Technology Harms Our Kids’ Learning and How to Help Them Thrive Again” by Dr. Jared Horvath, I knew I needed to spread my recommendation as far and wide as I could. Dr. Horvath is a neuroscientist who has worked with schools around the world. In his book, he explains how the brain learns and why “old-fashioned” teaching practices work.
