Editor, Gazette-Journal: Following the collapse of major Del Monte processing plants, the agricultural system faced a choice between redistributing thousands of tons of fresh peaches or systematically eliminating the food supply to maintain market prices. Rather than funding logistics to divert this massive surplus to food banks, school lunch programs, or families in need, the federal government chose to subsidize the physical destruction of the orchards. Through the USDA, up to $9 million in taxpayer funds will be used to pull and destroy approximately 420,000 fruit-bearing trees.
