Editor, Gazette-Journal:
Attending the joint session of Gloucester supervisors and the school board on Oct. 15, I became disappointed at a colleague trying to disparage the comments of Supervisor Philip Bazzani, who spoke in support of Superintendent Dr. Vladu and his fantastic accomplishments over his first year of Gloucester’s Superintendent of Schools.
I have lived here for 25 years and Dr. Vladu is the fifth superintendent I have worked with, all with a particularly good rapport. Each has a different approach to management, budgeting and ensuring that the division’s students meet the best scores possible in all subjects authorized by the Virginia Board of Education.
Critical to this are the parents; their participation in ensuring that their subject achievement is necessary is a plus. One needs to realize each student as an individual has a different level of intelligence each year of their schooling life. In their 12 years or more of learning, they may see one or two superintendents come and go.
I do not believe they are spending much time worrying about who is superintendent, but trying to listen to their teachers and mastering the subjects taught.
Supervisor Bazzani sent a message to the parents and the public at this meeting as to the new superintendent’s accomplishments; but what was not mentioned is Dr. Vladu’s annual performance evaluation will take place at the next regular meeting. In all my years of attending these functions a report on the superintendent’s performance has never been made public. Parents and citizens, you need to attend. You must look at the demeanor of the school board, when Supervisor Bazzani was speaking, then you will realize why you are most important to the total system. Attend the next session of the school board and show your support for Dr. Vladu.
