Letter: Saving lives is expensive

On behalf of homeless pets and Gloucester citizens whose lives are transformed through the care provided by Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, we respectfully ask the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors to fully fund GMHS’s FY 2020 funding request of $136,770, an amount proportional to the number of homeless pets received from the county and its citizens.

In GMHS’s last fiscal year, we invested nearly $546,000—more than one-third of our annual operating budget—in providing shelter and care for 689 homeless pets brought to us by Gloucester citizens and Gloucester County Animal Control. This investment also included veterinary care, transfer and adoption services for homeless dogs at the GCAC shelter.

During our last fiscal year, our volunteers donated more than 2,000 hours of service to ensure dogs at the GCAC shelter were walked and cared for every day, and our Spay/Neuter Clinic, located in White Marsh, provided nearly 2,777 low-c...
