Gloucester, Virginia has lost another treasure this week—I speak of Janice Whiting, an avid historian and author.

When Janice and her late husband, George, moved into the county, they took on the daunting task of "saving" Rosewell. George, with Jan always at his side, quite literally pulled things together and set the tone for what was to become a very successful stabilization and interpretive program at the ruins.

Jan was a real archaeologist of the old school. If there was digging to be done, she was there. If there were shards to be cleaned and processed, she was there. She worked steadily at the side of the great ones, never complaining about the heat or cold—always excited about the prospect of a new find. She volunteered many hours at Rosewell and then at Jamestown.

Recently, Jan had been doing research and writing about the genealogical history of her family in early New England, and she leaves a significant volume of work...
