Editor, Gazette-Journal:
Iran has attacked U.S. forces 200 times since 2020 and has been at war with the U.S. for 46 years. Its regime has murdered thousands of American citizens. “Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities.” These words spoken by every president since Reagan, but Trump was the only one courageous enough to put his words into action after giving Iran 60 days to negotiate an agreement.
Trump’s critics have said Trump has to have Congressional approval to go to war. That is true, but Trump has made it clear we are not at war with Iran, only their nuclear facilities. Trump’s predecessors Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Obama and Biden have all bombed countries without Congressional approval. In 2016 alone, Obama dropped 26,171 bombs in Libya, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Iraq and Syria, and he never once asked for Congressional approval. I don’t recall the calls for impeachment then. They are called strikes and do not have to have Congressional approval. It is within their power under Article 2 of the Constitution.
Some critics say Trump should have notified Congress before the strikes. Yeah, right. Could you see Congress keeping this military operation under wraps without someone like Adam Schiff leaking it to the New York Times or Washington Post? But all the same, he did notify Senators Thune and Schumer and Congressman Johnson. He called Jeffries, but he didn’t answer his phone. Trump pulled off a perfect mission with a grand slam success and the reason was because Congress did not know.
And as of Monday night, Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire and willingness to come to the table for peace talks. Trump seems to be right once again. “Peace through Strength.”
