Editor, Gazette-Journal: If you grew up in Gloucester in late ’50s and early ’60s and followed high school sports the name Walthall was mentioned often. AT (Ashby Turner) Walthall was a multi-sport star at GHS. Sadly, he passed overnight after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a soft spoken and kind man whom I looked up to. He was the quarterback in football and shortstop in baseball but excelled in basketball. He was one of the first members inducted into the GHS Athletic Hall of Fame and listed in the Daily Press as one of the top high school athletes of that era. Gloucester didn’t lose many games during his basketball career. It was standing-room-only in the GHS gym whenever he played. He had one of the prettiest jump shots you’d ever seen. He and Frank Belvin were a good one-two punch on the court. I have so many memories of AT scoring over 20 points a game which was before the 3-point shot. AT led the state in scoring in 1961.
