Editor, Gazette-Journal:

To quote Milton Friedman (who was paraphrasing Benjamin Franklin): “A society that puts equality before freedom will get neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both.”

Dr. Elrod’s go-to philosopher in his letter to the editor (“Will we be next?” Oct. 25 Readers Write), Jason Stanley, who “studied fascism closely” is not a household name. I would seek information on what fascism is from that magisterial work by Hannah Arendt, “The Origins of Totalitarianism.”

Dr. Elrod’s references to totally unconnected studies, ideas, etc., omits a singular term, “Socialism,” as a favorable form of … .  But Dr. Elrod did stick his foot out to identify Congressman Wittman and the Republican Party, who support the President’s agenda, as “fascist.” What an asinine assertion.
