Letter: No place is free from crime

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

My wife and I moved to Gloucester eight years ago, partly to get away from the crime in Newport News. For the most part we’ve loved it here, with only two close connections to a criminal act.

The first occurred about three years ago during Christmas when a known felon, driving a stolen pickup, thought our 100-yard-long driveway was a road and turned up it while being chased by the sheriff’s deputies. We were awakened at 2:30 a.m. by flashing lights in the yard.

This upstanding citizen, seeing he was in a driveway, jumped out of the truck and took off running. The truck continued on through our yard, through the cattle gate to the backyard, across the backyard tearing up the ground, and through the back fence, ending up in the woods. His shenanigans cost me over $800 in damages. He eventually went to trial and was sentenced to jail and ordered to make restitution to me.
