Letter: Health care issue is one of personal responsibility

In response to the two letters, from Jim Renner ("Affordable health care is inalienable right," March 22 Readers Write) and Bill Wallace ("Government health care an ‘exercise in futility,’" March 29 Readers Write) on health care, neither bring up the most salient points of the issue.

The United States has a health epidemic with several diseases and maladies weighing on the costs and the arguments. Let us just look at a few. Obesity is rampant in this country, with numbers approaching 50 percent of the population. Diabetes is an epidemic in our society. It is estimated that 20 million people suffer from diabetes. Diabetes causes more deaths per year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Type 2 or adult onset diabetes is almost exclusively diet related. The culprit for the most part, if not exclusively, is the western diet.

Alcohol and drug addiction or abuse is a pandemic in our country and one only has to look at the drug...
