Letter: Have your voices heard

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

Strata Solar is proposing an “Industrial Size Power Production” facility on rural farmland in the county. While going green is beneficial for all, no one expects an industrial facility on farmland near their homes. This project has adverse effects on the nearby landowners and has little or no tax benefits for the county. No one should have to suffer from this project.

During the recent planning meeting, adjacent landowners were not given enough time to present an opposing viewpoint to this project. The board of supervisors has agreed to hear a short PowerPoint slideshow on:

—Lessons learned from similar solar projects in North Carolina where these projects are no longer welcome;

—The possible need to rezone the surrounding properties to B1 business and Light Industrial because this power plant is light industrial;

—This project has specific issues: improper buffering (minimum 100 feet), increased tree density, disposal of hazardous material—to be paid up front, and what happens if a tornado destroys the field and it’s declared a “hazardous waste site?” Who pays?

—Adverse effects to the economy and Gloucester: Tax issues (Strata will pay little or no taxes), loss of revenue for the county, lower property values, loss of tourism, and a devalued “second home industry.” No jobs added, and Dominion takeover concerns;

—The need to go green smartly, to do several smaller projects, and ensure that proper ordinances are in place concerning these types of projects;

—Hunting and wildlife issues concerning this project, and

—The adverse effects on the adjacent property owners.

No matter what your viewpoint on this project, please consider attending the next Board of Supervisors meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, and have your voices heard.
