I was dismayed by the name calling (“leftists,” “communists,” etc.) and racial innuendo in letters from last week’s edition regarding the Confederate Memorial in Mathews Courthouse Green. It is a troubling example of the vitriol in our discourse today. My ancestors fought for the freedom to express our views (and also for the Confederacy, by the way). The writers have every right to express theirs, but I wish they would not employ hateful labels in doing so.
Therein lies the problem with deeding or leasing this property to a private party: The county would provide a soapbox, in the middle of our public square, to anyone who controls that organization. Do we really want to enable this kind of rhetoric?
