Letter: Eve of destruction

I attend church on Sundays, hoping to acquire some much-needed salvation. We are blessed to have a pastor who delivers thought-provoking sermons. This past Sunday, a portion of the message dealt with the collapse of the Roman Empire. The historian Edward Gibbon gives five reasons for the decline of the Roman Empire in his book, “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”:

Undermining the dignity and sanctity of the home;Higher and higher taxes and the spending of public money for free items for the populace;The mad craze for pleasure and sports becoming more exciting, brutal and immoral;Building of great armaments when the real enemy was within: The decay of individual responsibility, andDecay of religion and losing touch with life and losing power to guide the people.Does any of this sound familiar?
