Editor, Gazette-Journal: Virginia’s redistricting referendum is less than a week away. Voters are being asked: “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?” A “yes” vote allows new maps now, before the 2026 midterm elections. A “no” vote keeps the current districts in place until the next census. Regardless of how one votes, the question must be considered on its own terms. On Virginia’s Middle Peninsula, people tend to share an understanding: the things that matter most are built over time.
