Letter: Buildings are significant

I saw recently your article, published on April 16, titled “GVFRS hopes community will support its new building proposal.” In the article, Chief Clements states that the three buildings proposed for demolition didn’t appear to be architecturally significant.

In the interest of the community having accurate information, I want to make Gloucester residents aware that in a letter addressed to Chief Clements dated Feb. 13, 2020, the Department of Historic Resources (DHR) shared that the three buildings are indeed historically significant as contributing buildings to the Downtown Gloucester Historic District. The historic district is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.The loss of these three buildings will significantly alter the historic character of this section of Main Street.
