Letter: Board ignored desires of island residents

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors, at its Sept. 23 meeting, denied a request by citizens of Gwynn’s Island to declare certain state-maintained roads “golf cart friendly,” which would allow golf carts on certain neighborhood roads. The Virginia Code allows this if the speed limit on those roads is set at 25 mph, the golf cart operator is 16 years of age with a valid driver’s license, and the cart itself is equipped with lights and warning triangle. Other counties have approved this same request such as Middlesex, and as cited in the article, even Mathews County has done so on a limited basis.

The island is split on the issue. When the original petition was done by citizens asking for the designation, the count was 321 for and only 16 against. Property owners on Gwynn’s Island only were allowed to sign that petition. In view of the number of adults on the island as approximately 600 residents, these are compelling numbers. Ty...
