Letter: Are tariffs a good thing?

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I’m trying to understand why we are supposed to think that tariffs are a good thing for America. They sound tough till you actually look at what tariffs do.

The big bold tariff deal that the White House imposed on the European Union benefited them, not America. The problem is that the consumer (that would be you and me) pay the 15 percent tariff (tax). So where is the benefit to us? Since about 60 percent of our drugs come from the European Union, I don’t consider that a good thing at all. I also wonder what account the tax money is going into, probably something with the Trump dynasty name connected. How does that benefit America again I ask?

I’m also wondering why our representative Wittman hasn’t protested the White House imposing tariffs since that responsibility falls entirely under Congress. Seems like there are a number of things that Wittman has failed to deal with since he took the oath of office. I believe the oath is to defend the Constitution but instead he has pledged his oath of loyalty to the Republican Party and the felon in the White House. Since he no longer meets with his constituents or responds to messages, it is time to replace him with someone who actually values our democracy over a dictatorship.
