Letter: Another successful year for The Thrifty Spot

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

On Dec. 8, 2010 The Thrifty Spot, a transition-to-work training program for students with disabilities, opened its doors to the Mathews community. Residents, area churches, and a crew of dedicated volunteers have embraced this project making it a win-win for our students, for the Mathews County Public School division, and the community. The Thrifty Spot provides Mathews residents the only thrift opportunity in the county. The response to having a thrift shop has been overwhelming allowing The Thrifty Spot to financially support and contribute to instructional needs at all three schools within the division. Most importantly, your generous donations, volunteer hours, and retail shopping support have provided the opportunity for our students with disabilities to learn valuable vocational skills in preparation for jobs in the county upon graduation. A win-win!

I would like to thank Mathews High School Special Education staff Cathy Walker, Vera Dotson, Debbie Johnson, Deborah Silvus and Theresa Sumner, MHS principal Albert Green, and you, the Mathews community, for your awe-inspiring support of The Thrifty Spot!

For those of you not familiar, we extend an invitation to donate and shop. The location of The Thrifty Spot is 8314 Buckley Hall Road in Hudgins. It is operated by students with disabilities under the guidance of MHS special education staff. The thrift shop offers for sale slightly used clothing, housewares, small pieces of furniture, books, and student-created crafts. Hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Thank you for your support.
