Your April 6 editorial “To End All Wars” shares its clichéd title with the other phrase from President Woodrow Wilson’s World War I era reluctant request of Congress: “the world must be made safe for democracy.”

What finally brought the United States into the war? Imperial German submarines had resumed sinking neutral American ships taking American lives and disrupting supplies and food to U.S. friends England, France and Russia. But the final straw was the interception of a secret communique from Imperial Germany to Mexico promising Mexico the reward of the U.S. states of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona in return for Mexico opening up a second battle front against the U.S. which could promote a German victory.
