Learn to Row Camp to be held July 11-15

The Gloucester Rowing Association will hold a Learn to Row Camp next month for boys and girls ages 13-17 interested in learning the sport.

The GRA, a nonprofit organization that operates as the booster club for the Gloucester High School crew, will hold the camp the week of July 11-15 from 7 to 11 o’clock each morning at the Captain Sinclair Recreation Area in Naxera.

Students will learn water and boat safety, stroke mechanics and the basic techniques of sweep rowing and sculling. While the majority of time is spent on the water, there is also education about boats and equipment. Campers learn how to work as a team. Those who would like to continue rowing may join the competitive rowing program.
Register by calling or sending a text to GRA secretary Nikki Rowe at 804-694-7569. Also, contact Rowe for any further questions regarding the camp.

On Friday, weather-permitting, parents are invited to come at 10 a.m. and watch. Afterwards, parents and athletes will enjoy refreshments with their coaches and other rowers. At that time, GRA staff will be available to answer any questions about the club, the sport, and/or getting involved in the fall rowing program.

The cost is $155. All participants must know how to swim. A swim test will be performed on the first day of camp. Rowers are asked to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat (optional), drinking water in a reusable water bottle, a snack for mid-morning break, a change of clothing (sneakers, socks, shirt, shorts) and a towel, as well as any inhaler or other medication as needed. Rowers do not wear life jackets in the boat.
