Larry Francis Ashe, born on May 10, 1943, in Hampton, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home in Mathews, Virginia, on November 14, 2024 at the age of 81.
Larry remained steadfast in his values, always known for his kindness and playful spirit. He leaves behind cherished memories to his beloved wife of 55 years Sharon “Sherry” Collier Ashe; three children: daughters, Wendy Marshall (Jonathan), Chrisie Ashe (Jason) and son, Gregory Ashe, and grandson Orion Ashe; two brothers, Steve Ashe (Connie) and Michael Ashe (Sheri), and sister-in-law, Nancy Ashe; along with loved nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Kelly Zed and Cornelia Ashe, and brother, William Kelly Ashe.
Growing up in Hampton as one of four brothers, Larry’s childhood was filled with adventures and stories of playful mischief. He began his career with a short stint at the Shipyard before following his true calling in the fire service. Larry quickly became a beloved Captain, earning respect and admiration from his fellow firefighters for his dedication and leadership over the 32 years he gave to the department.
Larry began painting during his downtime at the firehouse and from there he began a hobby which grew into a passion. He went on to create numerous award-winning works of art, capturing local scenes, river landscapes, and iconic workboats beloved by the community of Mathews and surrounding areas.
After retiring, Larry continued his involvement with the arts through the Mathews Art League, where he served as Vice President and Gallery Manager for many years and contributed generously as a volunteer. His art and his heart touched many, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Larry is survived by his beloved family, cherished friends, and countless community members whose lives he enriched. His memory will forever live on in his artwork and the lasting impact of his kindness and service.

A Celebration of Life service was held at Peninsula Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
