Lady Dukes fall in state semifinals to Jefferson Forest

After 24 consecutive wins, the Gloucester High School varsity softball team suffered its first and only loss of the season to Jefferson Forest High School during the VHSL Class 4 state semifinals on Friday at Monticello High School.
Autumn Cookson (14-1) pitched the game, striking out seven batters and giving up nine hits in the 7-0 loss. Gloucester could only muster three hits during the game. Tessa Carteret singled in the second and seventh innings, but could not advance any further. Cookson doubled to deep left field in the sixth inning but was unable to make a run.
“This has been an incredible season for us with 24 wins and a final four appearance,” said coach Red Lindsay. “This team has maneuvered through so many obstacles to find success this year, and we are excited and hopefully well-positioned for success in the future.”
This is the first time the Lady Dukes reached the state semifinal competition. The team also broke the school record this season for wins in a single season.
