Lady Dukes advance to regional competition

Varsity field hockey players at Gloucester High School closed a 16-0 regular season Tuesday with a six-goal shutout of visiting Warwick. Now the team prepares for the 5A Regional Tournament that begins Oct. 25 in Virginia Beach.

“We started off slow again (against Warwick) but we played well overall. We also had a chance to honor our seniors,” said GHS head coach Mike Miller. Senior players Kessa Romero, Elizabeth Thomas and Madi Hodges were honored during halftime.

Romero had two goals and two assists in the win, Kate Neikirk had two goals and Meg Crowley and Thomas scored. Tally Vaughan was also credited with a scoring assist. 

The Dukes posted a 6-0 win over visiting Smithfield on Oct. 10, but the score was only 1-0 at the half. “We just got off to a bad start. We played well in the second half. We regained our focus, and that’s all it took,” Miller said.
