Lady Devils pick up first softball win

After a few rough games to start the season, the Mathews High School varsity softball team got its first win against Washington and Lee Tuesday night, beating the Eagles, 12-3.

Starting the game on the mound, Abbie Hudgins pitched the first four innings to earn the win. She gave up one unearned run, striking out two, giving up a walk and a hit batter and holding the Eagles hitless.

Emily West came on to pitch the last three innings, finishing with five strikeouts, one walk and giving up two earned runs. The Devils backed up the pitchers on defense with only two errors.

The sound defense and Chesapeake West’s diving catch to end the fourth inning gave the ladies some confidence at the plate, scoring a total of 12 runs. Victoria Bing led the team with three hits. Caroline Crittenden, Hudgins, Joice Small and Kelsey Ryan followed with two hits apiece. Shayla Wheeler, Hannah Robins and West each contributed one hit.
