Lady Devils improve to .500 with road win over Middlesex

In the final game before Christmas break, the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team extended its win streak to four games, defeating the Middlesex Chargers on the road, 46-40, in a Dec. 19 contest.

The offense for the varsity Devils was unstoppable off the opening tip. Ellie Armistead made two threes and Stacie Thomas added another, all in the first 20 seconds of the game. That made the Chargers play man-to-man defense to stop the Devils from scoring outside the paint.

The man defense, in turn, caused Mathews to slow down on offense until the end of the second quarter. The Devils’ defense was pretty consistent, holding the Chargers at an average of 10 points a quarter. Armistead led the Mathews girls with 20 points, followed by Thomas with 14 and Yolanda Fells with 12. With the win, the varsity Devils improved to .500 overall (5-5). The Lady Devils will return from break next Wednesday, Jan. 3, to host Grafton.
