Lady Devils head into post-season play

The Mathews High School softball team picked up an 8-6 win last Thursday on the road against the West Point Pointers. With one more regular season game to go, the Lady Devils are getting ready for post-season play.

Mathews traveled to Middlesex last night and will host the Chargers on Friday in the first round of the Tidewater District tournament.

In the West Point game, the girls were much improved compared to their outing against St. Margaret’s School a week before. Mathews managed to collect nine hits. Kelsey Ryan led the Devils with a pair of hits, while Caroline Crittenden, Abbie Hudgins, Victoria Bing, Joice Small, Hannah Robins, Chesapeake West and Emily West picked up one apiece.

Small had two RBIs, while Ryan, Hudgins, Bing, Crittenden and Emily West had one each. Emily West pitched all seven innings, allowing six runs off five hits with three strikeouts.

Friday’s district semifinal game will be played at 5 p.m. The tournament continues on Monday. ...
