Lady Devils beat Pointers, Trojans

The Mathews High School tennis team added two wins to its record, and is now 5-3 after defeating West Point and Essex last week.

Mathews scored its first shutout of the season on Tuesday, April 23, defeating the visiting West Point Pointers, 9-0. Top-seed Avery Betz defeated Kelsey Bantel, 6-4, 6-0, by using her consistent shots. Number two for Mathews, Caroline Evans was victorious over West Point’s Mattie Britt with 6-1, 6-0 scores. Number three, Connie Johnson, swept Meghan Bantel in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, by using her aggressive shots. 

Number four for Mathews, Alex Mills, followed in Johnson’s footsteps by winning big against Gracie Belcher, 6-0, 6-0. Caroline Bray at number five singles conquered Kayleigh Callis in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Kylie Berry won her first singles match against Kayla Farrell for an eight-game pro-set with an 8-2 score.
