Lady Devils beat Indians, fall to Islanders

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball teams split a pair of recent games, with both the varsity and JV squads falling to the visiting Poquoson Islanders on Saturday night and the two MHS teams posting wins over Northumberland on Monday.

The varsity Devils started play sluggishly on both sides of the ball against the Islanders, with Mathews trailing at the half, 27-18. Shots were not falling for Mathews until the end of the game, when the Devils started playing aggressively on offense by drawing fouls which led them to the foul line. The defense did not have an answer for one Poquoson point guard, who took over the game for the Islanders. Even though the Devils fought back to within six points, they still came up short, losing 45-34.

Leading scorers were Ellie Armistead with 11 points, Yolanda Fells with 10, Stacie Thomas with nine, and Abbie Hudgins with four.
