The Mathews Kiwanis Club (part of the Capital District Kiwanis) organized for the first time on Jan. 19 and elected Randall Casciello as its president and Kristin Morse as club secretary. “The club is still growing and we welcome any community members who are interested and excited to help the youth in Mathews,” Morse said. The next meeting will be held on Feb. 15; contact Morse at kristinsvcheers@gmail.com for details. Those taking part in this inaugural meeting were, front row seated from left, Casciello, Kristin Morse; second row, Neena Putt, Judy Rowe, Capital District Gov. Jennifer Wolff, Capital District Lt. Gov. Missy Zimmerman and Club Opener James Shackelford; back row, Club Coach Ron McCallum, Past Capital District Governor Scott Zimmerman, Kelley Harmon Oakland, Jill Casciello, Club Coach David James, Rick Kollar, Matt Williams, Ian Morse and, not pictured, Jean Howard, Dawn Lewis, Kim Callis and Wendy Kollar. In 1989, a Mathews Kiwanis Club was formed and remained active until the early 2000s, at which point some of the Mathews members joined with the Middlesex club. Randall Casciello said that he was first approached by a club outside of Mathews to join the Kiwanis, but he said he wanted instead to have a club serve the community in which he lives. The response he’s received from the new members told him he’s not alone in this feeling, he said.
